Cuba Refuses to Return Assata Shakur to United States Despite Donald Trump Demands

The Cuban government is rejecting what they’re referring to as the “hostile rhetoric” of President Donald Trump’s recent speech where he announced a new U.S. policy toward the island and demanded the return of former Black Panther, Assata Shakur.

The President appeared to play some serious politics at the expense of
Joanne Chesimard , otherwise known as Assata Shakur , the Godmother of the late Tupac Shakur .
Ironically on Tupac’s birthday last Friday, Trump demanded that Cuba return Chesimard to the US so she can be re-imprisoned after being convicted of killing a New Jersey cop and escaping from prison in 1979.
During a recent speech in Miami, Trump announced changes in U.S. policy toward Cuba and stated the return of Chesimard and other fugitives was one of several steps the Cuban government needed to take before the longstanding embargo could be lifted.
“To the Cuban government, I say, put an end to the abuse of dissidents, release the political prisoners, stop jailing innocent people, open yourselves to political and economic freedoms, return the fugitives from American justice, including the return of the cop killer Joanne Chesimard,” Trump said.
However, following Trump’s speech Cuba says they are willing to continue “respectful dialogue” with the U.S. on topics of mutual interest.
In a statement released on Friday, President Raul Castro’s administration says Trump’s speech was “loaded with hostile rhetoric that recalls the times of open confrontation.”
The lengthy statement goes on to strike a conciliatory tone, saying Cuba wants to continue negotiations with the U.S. on a variety of subjects.
Cuba says “the last two years have shown that the two countries can cooperate and coexist in a civilized way.”
